Welcome to a new series I’m starting called “Joshtagram Updates”. I was thinking about making these posts a weekly series, but I’m not entirely sure how I feel about that yet. If you folks hate me for making this, then obviously I won’t do it again. This series will be covering everything that I’ve been up to, eating, and cooking, on my Instagram over the last few weeks. We will start off our journey with my en route to The Texas Renaissance Festival. If you’ve never been to this amazing event, then I highly recommend you check it out. You can go for the amazing and immersive experience, or you can go for the naked elves and fairies, whatever floats your boat.
I went to the festival with some of my new friends I made in Austin, Texas. I felt the treat was highly necessary especially after an increasingly mundane search for a place to live there. I never understood the stress that my parents expressed when searching for a place to live until I started researching for one on my own.

After a great time at the festival I drove my friends back to Austin. Unfortunately for me, I was still homeless at the time. I snagged one of my most used Austin Airbnb’s (the sweetest bnb lady I’ve met so far) as soon as I dropped them off and continued my search on Craigslist. I ain’t afraid of no Craigslist killer, in fact I only had one weird person contact my ad. They said that rent was free so long as I gave them massages and “serviced” them. A sweet offer, but no thanks. I did manage to find a restaurant named “bacon” though, so that still counted as a pretty big success for the me.
I also tried my first bowl of real ramen, not the college kid packaged kind, the real deal stuff. I’ll be honest I really did enjoy it, although the creamy broth was extremely rich. Of course, that didn’t stop me from devouring the whole bowl.

Fast forward a week or so. At this point I found a wonderful place near South Lamar and moved in right away. It all happened very quickly, mainly because I didn’t want to wait anymore. It was my prime time to get out of my parents house and live on my own. Plus I felt fully energized and ready to take all of this on, sort of like a call to arms. I got the okay from my new roommate, packed my bags, and moved the very next day.
My mom has been such a trooper with all the difficulty of seeing me move away even though it’s only a few hours away. I had her come visit me a couple days after the move and we had Gourdough’s donuts and talked about great things.
I had tacos again, I’m sorry. #paleyolo #tacos #austin #torchys #notsorry

Just remaining entranced by Austin food.
I took this photo just at the right time. The day after I captured this, almost half the leaves had fallen off.

Later in the week one of my high school friends helped me with decorating my room. 700 dollars went into Ikea and only 25 dollars came out of Ikea. Jokes aside, I think that’s actually a pretty fair budget for a room, or at least for me it was. I suppose once you get into the Ikea spirit you just can’t help yourself.
I also met with my amazingly talented friend Ashleigh Amoroso to talk about a cool food photography workshop we will be announcing details about very soon! Naturally, we went somewhere that was extremely photogenic.
That’s it for this Joshtagram Update, thanks for reading!
Welcome to Austin Josh! I’ve been following your blog for a couple years so am looking forward to your take on the town. When you’re ready for some home cooking I hope you’ll head to the east side to check out Boggy Creek and Springdale Farms – great veggies and eggs (and the winter season is great so far!) and Salt & Time is a great place for your protein and other fun stuff.
Looks like you’ve made a good start on the restaurants . . . and Ikea is always dangerous! 😉
Your Instagram game is on point brotha! Keep it it that pic of the cow in the bush is totally sick.
I love this format!
I lived in Austin doing clinical rotations many years ago. It was THE BEST place for being young, single, and having a life. Great nightlife, lots to do, beautiful area, and a fascinating mix of people between the Capitol and the university. Enjoy and keep telling us all about it!
welcome to austin! south lamar is a fun area to live, so many things to do nearby.
i’m up in round rock, and if you’re up for a bit of a ride, there’s a great restaurant here that focuses on grass-fed beef from their family’s ranch. they also have some swedish dishes, honoring their family’s heritage. there’s some other good places here too, like greenhouse craft food, jack allen’s kitchen, hop doddy, etc.
Hi Josh. We’ve had your cookbook for a long time now and are always going back to it for the deliciousness thats in there. Made your pecan pie for Thanksgiving and it was the first thing to be completely eaten…even before the turkey was gone. You’ve inspired me because my 14 yr old struggles with weight and recently has been extremely consious of it, affecting his feelings about himself, body image…etc. As a mom its really hard to know how to help, especially in a healthy and mindful way that doesn’t cause food issues down the road. I love my son no matter what he looks like and, ideally, I want him to love himself no matter what he looks like. But, that’s hard for most and if he wants to do something about his weight, I want to provide all the tools he would need. Although he feels increasingly negative about himself, his motivation to make changes usually doesn’t last too long, though. So, Im left not knowing if I should encourage/ push during those times, or just go with the flow. Any advice (and I’m sorry, you probably get asked a lot) would be much appreciated. BUT, the main reason I am commenting is to ask where you got that dog teepee? My pups would love a hideout like that. Cheers to you moving out and stepping into adulthood with both feet!
Hi Josh! Love your Instagram photography, especially the cow in the bush. Love it! 🙂
I’d love to see many more Joshtagram update posts like this one.
